The Roadside 411: What is roadside assistance?
Roadside assistance is a service that assists drivers when they’re experiencing an issue that leaves them unable to operate their vehicle. When drivers request roadside assistance, a service provider will arrive on the scene and take the necessary actions and/or recommendations to get the vehicle operating safely once again. There are a variety of sources for roadside assistance, but it’s most commonly available as a coverage option on auto insurance policies or provided through your vehicle or dealer warranty.
What does roadside assistance cover?
Roadside assistance typically covers flat tires, jump starts, fuel delivery, vehicle lockouts, winching, and tows. The coverage amount for each benefit is dependent on the roadside plan you have. To learn more about what your roadside coverage entails, check your auto policy, warranty, or program details to see what’s covered and if any limitations apply.
Why is roadside assistance important?
Just over 1 in 2 drivers experience a roadside event every 12 months. And if you’re an electric vehicle (EV) owner, your likelihood of experiencing a roadside event is 25% higher. Given these statistics, it’s not a matter of “if” you’ll need roadside, but “when”. Using professional help via a roadside assistance plan is the easiest, fastest, and–most importantly–safest way to get back on the road if your vehicle is disabled. Having a roadside plan and understanding what it covers and how to use it are proactive things you can do today to ensure you’re properly prepared when you experience your next roadside event.
How do I know if I have roadside assistance?
Roadside assistance is available through various providers. The two most common are through auto insurance and vehicle warranty or service contract.
Auto insurance.
Typically, roadside assistance coverage is available through your auto insurance policy, either as an optional coverage or as part of your policy. Take a look into your policy to find out if you’re covered. You can do this online, on the mobile app, or give your insurance agent a call. You may also see roadside coverage information on your proof of insurance card.
Vehicle warranty.
If you recently purchased a new vehicle, roadside assistance is typically included in your warranty. If you purchased an extended service contract, you probably have roadside coverage. Take a look at your warranty or service contract to confirm, or reach out to the dealership you purchased your car from to learn more. Your vehicle may also include a sticker or window cling with information about roadside assistance.
Understanding your coverage
Roadside assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can use it any time your vehicle needs assistance in getting back on the road.
Contrary to what the name implies, roadside assistance isn’t just for the side of the road. You can utilize your coverage anywhere your vehicle needs assistance–including a parking lot or your driveway. In fact, the majority of “roadside” events actually occur at home (42%), and in public parking lots (26%). Additionally, your plan may also include services that have nothing to do with driving–such as home lockouts.
The fastest, easiest, and most convenient way to access your roadside assistance plan is digitally. In addition to requesting help online, most roadside assistance providers offer a mobile app that provides the best roadside experience. If available, download the app on your phone and set up your user account. Whether it’s through the website, mobile app or phone, familiarize yourself with where and how to submit a roadside request so you’re adequately prepared when faced with an actual event.
The most common and cost-effective way to obtain roadside is through your auto insurance or vehicle warranty. If your auto insurance or new vehicle warranty doesn’t include coverage as a base offering, you can usually add it on to your policy. Some carriers offer different tiers of roadside so you can choose the coverage that best suits your needs. You can shop and learn more about roadside plans and rates on your carrier’s website – including how to add it to your policy. If you have additional questions or concerns, reach out directly to your carrier or insurance agent. You can also obtain roadside assistance coverage from other providers like credit card companies and cell phone providers.
