Are You Road Trip Ready?

Adventure awaits. Here's your guide to safe travels.

According to a study conducted by The Vacationer, 75% of Americans plan at least one road trip each year. Whether you're chasing autumn foliage, visiting family for the holidays, or embarking on a summer road trip, preparedness is key to a safe and enjoyable journey. Get ahead of road trip woes by following these travel tips.

Get your vehicle ready

Conduct a thorough inspection of your vehicle before adding mileage to it during a road  trip. Check for potential problems that may delay your trip, including the following:

Recalls. A recall often means a part of your vehicle doesn’t  meet minimum safety standards. Make sure to check for recalls here.

Tires. Tire health can make or break a road trip.  It is critical to check your tire pressure, tread, and to ensure you have an operable spare tire.

Oil Changes. Regular oil changes improve your engine’s lifespan and performance. Make sure you’ve gotten your scheduled oil change before your trip.

Belts and Hoses. Check your vehicle's belts and hoses for cracks and connectivity, as they are imperative to your vehicle's cooling, charging, and air conditioning systems.

Prep an Emergency Kit

While not expected, it’s important to prepare for an emergency situation during your travels. A comprehensive emergency kit contains items to help you remain safe until help can arrive. Items to consider are:

  • A first aid kit
    • Blankets, bandages, gauze, tape, antibiotic ointment, gloves, scissors
  • Flashlight
  • Phone charger
  • Flares or a reflective triangle
  • Tire pressure gauge

Check the Weather Before You Travel

Severe weather can have serious impacts on your trip. Weather events like thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, and winter storms can strike unexpectedly. In the days leading up to your departure, check the weather on your driving route to, from, and in your destination. It is also helpful to read up on how to safely respond to surprise weather events with a plan in place.

Download the mobile app

Make sure your auto insurance policy or vehicle warranty information is at your fingertips. Download your provider's app so you can easily request assistance if you have a roadside event like a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical issue. This is the easiest, fastest, and safest way to get your problem fixed and get you back on the road.
